Portuguese passport 4th most “powerful”

The Portuguese passport is in fourth place in the Henley Passport Index ranking, which is based on data from IATA – International Air Transport Association, allowing you to visit 191 destinations around the world, without the need for a tourist visa.

The first place in the ranking, which is considered a reference tool in the evaluation of world passports in terms of global mobility, is shared by four European countries, namely Spain, France, Germany and Italy, and by the Asian countries Japan and Singapore, since passports from these countries allow you to visit 194 out of 227 destinations around the world.

The second position is shared by Finland and South Korea, with these countries’ passports allowing you to visit 193 countries, followed, in the third position, by Austria, Denmark, Ireland and the Netherlands, with 192 possible destinations.

The Portuguese passport is placed in fourth position, which is shared with Belgium, Luxembourg, Norway and the United Kingdom, all allowing you to visit 191 destinations, while Greece, Malta and Switzerland close the Top 5, allowing you to visit 190 destinations with no need for a tourist visa.

The second half of the Top 10 of this ranking also includes countries such as Australia, the Czech Republic, New Zealand and Poland in sixth position and allowing visits to 189 countries; Canada, Hungary and the USA, in seventh place and visiting 188 destinations; Estonia and Lithuania, in eighth place and visiting 187 destinations; Latvia, Slovakia and Slovenia, in ninth position and visits to 186 countries, while the Icelandic passport closes the Top10, allowing visits to 185 destinations.

“The average number of destinations that travellers can access without a visa has almost doubled, from 58 in 2006, to 111 in 2024. However, as we enter the new year, the highest-ranked countries can now travel to a number impressive number of countries, while Afghanistan, at the end of the ranking, only has access to 28 visa-free countries”, says Christian H. Kaelin, president of Henley & Partners, who is responsible for preparing this ranking.
