International Day of Monuments and Sites

With the aim of raising awareness about Portugal’s cultural heritage diversity, the International Day for Monuments and Sites was established on April 18, 1982. Since then, the commemorative day has reinforced the message about the country’s cultural diversity and also highlighted the importance of protecting and conserving these spaces.

Usually, during this period, various cultural activities are carried out to attract public attention to the cause, such as guided tours, artistic performances, exhibitions, street animations, recreations and historical reenactments, workshops, educational sessions, and much more.

And, in celebration of this date, we have selected seven important monuments of Portugal for you to explore:

1- Pena National Palace

Located in Sintra, this space was created in 1838. In the region, you can find many palaces and castles.

2- Belém Tower

Built in 1520, Belém Tower is located in the city of Belém, a parish of Lisbon. The area is full of incredible tourist spots.

3- Jerónimos Monastery

Also located in Belém, construction of this monument began in 1502. It’s a great option for a stroll, allowing you to walk from the monastery and discover various other cultural attractions along the way.

4- Batalha Monastery

Construction of this space, located in the city of Batalha in central Portugal, began in 1387. The region is rich in tourist attractions.

5- Óbidos Castle

Located in the city of Óbidos, central Portugal, this castle has been present in the country since before 1153.

6- Guimarães Castle

An ancient monument, built in the 10th century, located in the city of Guimarães, in the district of Braga.

7- Alcobaça Monastery

Built in 1252, this monument is located in the city of Alcobaça in central Portugal.
